On 31st May, 1915, 18 Brigade of 6th Division took over the front line between the Ypres-Roulers railway and the Ypres-Verlorenhoek road with the 16th London battalion moving into support. This was the Ypres salient where there was always a lot of shelling by both sides. On 4th June the enemy concentrated their bombardment in this sector on the support trenches and in the mayhem and carnage that ensued, nine men from 16th London were killed and another twelve wounded. That night the battalion moved onto the front line where they remained until relieved on 8th June, On 10th June Charles Bingham died from wounds probably received during this tour of the trenches.
